Need Help Getting Help…Call 2-1-1

You already know to call 9-1-1 in an emergency to get connected to the police, fire, or ambulance service. But what if you need answers or help and it’s not an emergency? Suppose you need help for an elderly parent, or you need to find affordable daycare for your child so that you don’t miss more work, or you’re having difficulty paying your bills and now you are facing the prospect of having to choose between necessities like food and shelter. You can call 2-1-1 or 1-800-899-1479 to get answers to these and many other questions. By calling 2-1-1, you can speak to an informed and caring information and referral (I&R) specialist who can put you in touch with health and human service organizations right here in the Orange County that can help. The hotline is free, confidential, and available twenty-four hours a day. There is also a translation service utilizing over 150 languages. Let 2-1-1 be your connection for:

Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP)

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program is available to any Orange County resident who may be hungry, homeless, or those who are at risk of becoming hungry or homeless. EFSP funds are used to provide served meals or groceries, lodging in a mass shelter or hotel and/or one month’s rent, mortgage or utility payment.

Free Income Tax Services Available

Through the combined efforts of the Orange County United Way, the Hudson Valley CASH Coalition, 2-1-1, and participating agencies, free tax services will be offered to qualifying Orange County residents.

If your family earned less than $42,000 last year, or if you are an individual who earned less than $16,000, you may qualify for an Earned Income Tax Credit.

To take advantage of these services and learn what additional tax credits you may be entitled to, please call 2-1-1 for a participating agency near you.
